By Episode 8, you had completed your first temperament verification using the fourth-fifth cross-check — two intervals sharing a common note, confirming each other’s accuracy through their proportional beat rates. That system is powerful. But it has a limitation: both the fourth and the fifth are made of the same basic material. They share notes. Their beat rates are mathematically coupled. In Episode 9, Eathan Janney introduces the major third as an independent third check interval — one that draws on a completely different acoustic relationship and therefore provides genuinely independent confirmation. When your fourths, fifths, and thirds all agree, the conclusion is not a guess. It is a convergence. This episode is where your verification system becomes complete.

Full Episode Summary

The Return of the Major Third

You first encountered the major third in Episode 4, as your introduction to the central paradox of equal temperament: that a tuned piano is an instrument of controlled, mathematically precise imperfections. The major third (C4–E4, for example) beats at approximately 10 beats per second in the middle register — far faster than the barely perceptible pulse of the perfect fifth. Its rapid, clearly audible beating made it an ideal teaching interval for demonstrating what “beating” sounds like in the first place.

But in Episode 4, the major third was used as an illustration. You were asked to hear it, to notice it, to understand what it signified about temperament. You were not asked to count it precisely, or to use it as a measurement tool. That changes in Episode 9.

The distinction Eathan draws in this episode is between hearing an interval and reading it. Hearing is passive recognition — yes, there is a beat. Reading is active measurement — how fast is that beat, exactly, and what does its precise rate tell me about whether the notes are correctly tuned? In the early lessons, hearing was enough. At this stage of the series, you are learning to read.

The Mathematics of the Major Third Beat Rate

The major third in equal temperament spans four semitones. In equal temperament, each semitone is a frequency ratio of 2^(1/12) — approximately 1.05946. A pure major third, by contrast, has a frequency ratio of exactly 5:4 between the fundamental of the upper note and the fundamental (or second harmonic) of the lower note.

Equal temperament’s major third is wider than pure. Specifically, it is wider by approximately 14 cents — seven times the 2-cent narrowing of each fifth. This is a substantial deviation. Where the fifth’s 2-cent narrowing produces a barely perceptible once-per-second beat, the major third’s 14-cent widening produces the rapid, conspicuous beating you heard in Episode 4.

What matters for Episode 9 is not the cents value but the beat rate — and more specifically, how that beat rate varies by register and how it relates to the beat rates of the fifth and fourth.

In the middle register (around C4), a correctly tempered major third beats at approximately 10–12 beats per second. One octave higher (C5), it beats at approximately 20–24 beats per second — again, roughly doubling with each octave, following the same physics as the fifth and fourth. The exact values are predictable from the piano’s stringing and can be calculated in advance. When Eathan gives you “approximately 10 beats per second” as a target for C4–E4, this is not an estimate — it is a physically derived target value, the same kind of hard number he gave you for the fifth (approximately 1 beat per second) and the fourth (approximately 1.5 beats per second).

Why the Major Third Provides Independent Verification

A reasonable question at this point: if you already have the fourth-fifth cross-check from Episode 8, why add a third interval? What does the major third confirm that the fourth and fifth don’t already tell you?

The answer is acoustic independence. The fourth and fifth share the same interval-generating logic: they are both fifth-related intervals (a fourth is an inverted fifth, as Episode 7 established), and their beat rates are mathematically coupled. If you have a fourth and fifth that agree with each other, you have confirmed internal consistency between two related intervals. That’s useful — but it doesn’t rule out a systematic error in which both intervals are off by the same amount in the same direction.

The major third’s beat rate is derived from a different acoustic relationship entirely — the 5:4 frequency ratio and its interaction with the piano’s harmonic series. It is sensitive to errors in pitch that the fourth-fifth cross-check might miss. When the major third agrees with the fourth and fifth, you have confirmation from three independent acoustic directions. The probability that all three could be wrong in the same way, and still agree with each other, is vanishingly small.

Eathan describes this as the difference between consistency and accuracy. The fourth-fifth cross-check tells you your intervals are internally consistent. Adding the major third tests whether that consistent interval system is also correctly located in pitch space — whether your temperament is not just internally coherent but correctly set.

Hearing the Major Third with Counting Precision

For many students, Episode 9 represents the first time they are asked to count the major third’s beat rate rather than simply perceive it as “fast.” This is a meaningful step up in precision. Counting ten beats per second is considerably harder than counting one beat per second — your working memory has to hold and process ten discrete pulses in a single second, rather than waiting a full second between pulses.

Eathan addresses this challenge directly. The skill you need is not to count every individual beat but to develop a subjective rate sense calibrated to known targets. At this stage of the series, you have already internalized two reference rates from daily practice: 1 beat per second (the fifth) and 1.5 beats per second (the fourth). The major third at 10 beats per second can be anchored to a different perceptual reference — a rapid, almost tremolo-like flutter that sits between a slow oscillation and a pitched buzz.

The practical approach Eathan uses in Episode 9 is to compare the rate to a metronome reference before attempting to count by ear alone. Play the major third at C4–E4 and hold the interval. Count the beats for two seconds. If you counted approximately 20 beats in two seconds, you are close to the target. Over daily practice, this count becomes an internalized sense — you recognize 10 beats per second not by counting each one but by the texture and density of the beating pattern.

The Three-Interval Verification Drill

The practical exercise in Episode 9 brings together everything you have learned in Episodes 6 through 9: the fifth, the fourth, and now the major third, all applied to the same region of the keyboard.

The target: The notes C4, E4, G4, and C5. These four notes contain all three check intervals simultaneously:

  • C4–G4: the perfect fifth (approximately 1 beat per second)
  • G4–C5: the perfect fourth (approximately 1.5 beats per second)
  • C4–E4: the major third (approximately 10–12 beats per second)

By checking all three intervals in one region of the keyboard, you are performing a triangulated verification of three notes using three independent acoustic relationships. If C4 is correct (anchored to your A440 foundation from Episode 2), then the accuracy of G4 is confirmed by both the fifth C4–G4 and the fourth G4–C5. The accuracy of E4 is confirmed by the third C4–E4. All three intervals can be evaluated in under two minutes.

When all three pass — when the fifth beats slowly at roughly 1 per second, the fourth beats at 1.5, and the third flutters at approximately 10 — you have something new: a verified position. Not just one interval checked, but an entire four-note region confirmed by three independent measures.

What It Means When the Third Disagrees

The most instructive moments in this episode are the cases where the major third fails the cross-check — where the third beats too fast or too slow relative to the correct target, even though the fourth and fifth pass.

The third beats too fast (faster than ~12 per second at C4): E4 is almost certainly too high. The major third is wide of its already-wide equal-tempered value, which means the upper note (E4) has been tuned sharp relative to C4. The fourth and fifth may still pass if G4 and C5 are correctly placed — but E4 is out.

The third beats too slow (slower than ~8 per second at C4, or approaching a more locked, pure quality): E4 is too low. The major third is converging toward its pure 5:4 ratio — which sounds better in isolation but is wrong for equal temperament. Again, the fourth and fifth involving G4 would still pass, while the error lives specifically in E4.

This diagnostic specificity is the key value of adding the major third to your check system. It covers different notes than the fourth and fifth, so it catches errors that those intervals don’t. In Episode 9, Eathan introduces the language for describing these diagnostic states — “the third is running hot” or “the third is lazy” — which will be used throughout the remainder of the series.

Your Verification System Is Now Complete

Episodes 6 through 9 have built something with three layers:

  1. The perfect fifth (Episodes 6–7) — your primary setting interval, beating once per second in the mid-range, the interval through which the entire chromatic scale is derived.
  2. The fourth-fifth cross-check (Episode 8) — two interval perspectives on the same note, confirming internal consistency.
  3. The major third (Episode 9) — an independent check on a different note, drawn from a different acoustic relationship, providing genuine confirmation of accuracy rather than just consistency.

Together, these three interval types constitute the core verification toolkit of professional aural piano tuning. With them, you can check any region of the piano’s temperament octave and receive a definitive answer about whether the intervals are correctly set. In Episode 10, you will use this toolkit to begin laying the bearings — the process of setting a complete temperament octave from scratch.

Episode 9 Ear Training Exercise: The Third-Level Verification Drill

This exercise brings together your fifth, fourth, and major third skills for the first time in a single, coordinated verification sequence. You are performing professional-level temperament checking — three independent interval measurements on the same four-note region.

What you’re training: The ability to check three different intervals in a single region of the keyboard, compare their beat rates to expected targets, and draw a diagnostic conclusion about whether the notes are correctly tuned.

What you need: Any acoustic piano that is approximately in tune. Quiet room, focused attention. This exercise is more cognitively demanding than previous ones — give yourself at least fifteen uninterrupted minutes.

How to do it:

  1. Settle at the piano in your practice posture. Take a few slow breaths. You will be moving deliberately between intervals — give each one full attention before proceeding to the next.

  2. Check the fifth — C4 and G4. Play them simultaneously. Listen for approximately 1 beat per second. Count the beat for five seconds: did you count approximately 5 beats? If yes, the fifth passes. Hold this rate in auditory memory.

  3. Check the fourth — G4 and C5. Play them simultaneously. Listen for approximately 1.5 beats per second — noticeably faster than the fifth you just heard. Count for four seconds: did you count approximately 6 beats? If yes, the fourth passes. Confirm the rate ratio: the fourth should be clearly faster than the fifth you remember.

  4. Check the major third — C4 and E4. Play them simultaneously. Listen for a rapid, flutter-like beating pattern — approximately 10 beats per second. Count for two seconds: did you count roughly 20 beats? If you lost count, that’s normal at first — focus instead on the texture: does it feel like a fast flutter, not a slow oscillation? If yes, the third passes.

  5. Draw a conclusion. If all three checks pass, the C4–E4–G4–C5 region is correctly tempered. This is a verified position — make a mental note. If any one interval fails, apply the diagnostic logic from this episode: identify which note is most likely out of position based on which intervals involve it.

  6. Move up one step. Repeat the sequence at G4–B4–D5–G5:

    • G4–D5 (fifth): should beat approximately 1.5 beats per second (faster than C4–G4 by register)
    • D5–G5 (fourth): should beat approximately 2 beats per second
    • G4–B4 (major third): should beat approximately 14–15 beats per second (faster than C4–E4 by register)
  7. Compare the two regions. You are building register awareness: the same interval types beat faster in higher registers, but their proportional relationships remain constant.

Daily practice: Ten to fifteen minutes per session. In the first three days, work only at the C4 region — build consistency before adding the second position. From day four onward, alternate between C4 and G4 regions until both feel reliable. By the end of one week, you should be able to run the complete three-interval check at any position in the temperament octave in under three minutes.

A note on cognitive load: You are now simultaneously maintaining three different beat rates in working memory, comparing each to an internalized target, and tracking which notes each interval involves. This is the most demanding ear training exercise in the series so far. If it feels overwhelming, return to individual interval checks (Episodes 6 and 8) for one or two sessions before attempting the combined drill again. Progression, not speed, is the goal.
