The short answer is that the best technicians use both — but they always build aural skills first. Here’s why that order matters, and what each method genuinely offers.


What Is Aural Piano Tuning?

Aural tuning means tuning a piano entirely by ear. No apps. No screens. Just a tuning lever, a tuning fork, and the ability to hear what the instrument is telling you.

The method works through beats — the audible pulsing that occurs when two strings are close in pitch but not identical. When two frequencies interact, they create a wavering effect that speeds up as the strings diverge and slows to silence as they align. A trained aural tuner learns to control the rate of those beats with precision, since equal temperament requires that specific intervals beat at specific speeds. A perfect fourth beats slightly faster than a perfect fifth. Major thirds beat faster still. The ear becomes calibrated to these rates the way a musician’s ear is calibrated to rhythm.

What Electronic Tuning Tools Do Well
