Now it’s time to meet the interval that experienced aural tuners return to more than any other: the perfect fifth. Full Episode Summary

The Perfect Fifth: An Interval That Lives at the Center of Everything

Of all the intervals in Western music, the perfect fifth has the most influential physics. Two notes a perfect fifth apart — C and G, for example — have frequencies in the simple whole-number ratio of 3:2. Play a pure fifth and it sounds locked, resonant, almost architectural. The overtones of the two notes align in a way that seems to make the interval settle. Ancient Greek theorists built entire musical systems around it. Medieval composers called it the most consonant interval after the octave. Every stringed instrument in the orchestra is tuned in fifths.

For a piano tuner, the perfect fifth holds a different kind of significance. It is the interval through which the entire chromatic scale is historically and practically derived. The circle of fifths — twelve perfect fifths stacked in sequence — almost, but not quite, returns you to where you started. That small discrepancy (the Pythagorean comma you met in Episode 4) is what equal temperament distributes by narrowing each fifth by a tiny, equal amount. Twelve slightly narrow fifths complete the circle. The piano is in tune.

This means that when you tune a piano aurally, the perfect fifth is your primary working interval. You set twelve of them — moving through the circle — and when you are done, you have established the equal-tempered scale. Everything else on the piano is derived from this foundation. The fifth is not one interval among many. It is the structural element of the whole instrument.

How Narrow Is “Correctly Narrow”?

In Episode 6, Eathan is precise about what “slightly narrow” means in equal temperament — because this is not a concept you can approximate. Every equal-tempered fifth is narrowed by exactly 1/12 of the Pythagorean comma, which works out to about 2 cents of pitch (a cent is 1/100 of a semitone). Two cents is an extremely small deviation. On a piano, it produces a beat rate of roughly 1 beat per second in the middle register (around C4 to G4), with the rate doubling approximately every octave as you move up.

This is the critical number to internalize: a perfectly tuned equal-tempered fifth in the mid-range beats approximately once per second. Not twice, not four times — once. If you hear a faster beat, the fifth is too narrow. If you hear no beat at all, it’s too wide (or pure — which is wrong for equal temperament). If you hear a beat that is slow, steady, and close to one per second, you are listening to correct temperament.

For context: in Episode 4, you heard major thirds beating at 8 to 10 times per second. The fifth beats ten times slower. This makes it harder to detect — and considerably harder to count precisely. The exercise in Episode 6 is your first introduction to working at this level of subtlety.

The Circle of Fifths as a Tuning Roadmap

Most musicians encounter the circle of fifths as a theory diagram — a useful way to understand key relationships, chord progressions, or how many sharps and flats a key signature has. For an aural tuner, it is something far more concrete: a step-by-step tuning sequence.

Here is how it works in practice. You begin with A4, which you have tuned to your fork. You tune the octave below (A3) from that anchor. Now, from A3, you tune a fifth up to E4 — adjusting E4 until the A3-E4 interval beats approximately once per second. Then from E4, you tune a fifth up to B4, adjusting until that interval also beats approximately once per second. Then F#4. Then C#4. And so on, moving through the circle, checking each fifth as you go, until you have established all twelve pitches of the temperament octave.

At the end, you test your work by playing all the intervals — fourths, thirds, sixths — and checking that their beat rates are consistent with equal temperament. If they are, your temperament is set. If one interval is slightly off, you trace back through the circle to find where the error entered.

This process — laying the bearings — is what Eathan covers in detail in the premium track. Why the Fifth Is the Right Interval to Use

A reasonable question at this point: why use the perfect fifth for temperament, when you already know the major third (Episode 4)? The major third beats 8 to 10 times per second — fast, easy to hear, easy to count. Why not build the temperament with an interval you can already hear clearly?

The answer is precision. Temperament is about spreading a small error evenly across twelve intervals. If you use a fast-beating interval as your primary tool, small discrepancies in your counting (is that 8 beats per second or 9?) produce larger errors in the final result. The fifth, beating once per second, gives you more time to evaluate each beat. A difference of 0.5 beats per second is the difference between a well-set temperament and a noticeably uneven one — and that difference is much easier to hear at 1 beat per second than at 9.

There is also a historical reason. The fifth was the interval around which the entire Western tuning tradition was built, long before equal temperament existed. The tools, the vocabulary, and the pedagogical sequence of aural tuning have always centered on the fifth. Learning to hear it as a tuner means entering a centuries-old tradition of listening that is still the gold standard of the craft.

Bearing Witness to a Single Beat

Episode 6’s most important moment is a deceptively simple exercise: Eathan asks you to play C4 and G4 simultaneously and listen for a single slow beat in the combined sound. Not the complex interaction of overtones. Not the general quality of the interval. One slow beat — approximately once per second — emerging from the sustained tone of two piano keys held down together.

For many students, this is the hardest listening task so far in the series. The beat is there, but it is subtle. The piano’s natural decay makes it easier to hear in the first few seconds after the attack, before the tone drops below the room’s ambient noise floor. The exercise requires focused, quiet attention — more than the major third drill, which announces itself fairly obviously.

Eathan frames this as a milestone: “The first time you hear a fifth beat clearly — not just suspect that it might be beating, but actually hear it — you have crossed a threshold. Your ear has become sensitive enough to work.” This level of precision was always there as a latent capacity. The first five episodes of the series were building the auditory attention you needed to reach it.

Episode 6 Ear Training Exercise: The Slow Fifth Beat

This is your first exercise in deliberate beat-rate control at the temperament level. You are not adjusting strings — you are training your ear to isolate and track a single, slow acoustic event: the once-per-second beat of an equal-tempered perfect fifth.

What you’re training: The ability to hear a very slowly beating interval and distinguish it from a pure (non-beating) interval — the foundational perceptual skill of temperament-setting.

What you need: Any acoustic piano that is approximately in tune. A quiet room matters more than usual for this exercise — the beat you’re listening for is subtle.

How to do it:

  1. Sit at the piano and place both hands in your lap. Take three slow breaths. You need genuine quiet attention for this drill — more than the previous exercises.
  2. Play C4 (middle C) and G4 (the G above middle C) simultaneously, using a moderate touch. Let both notes ring fully.
  3. Listen past the attack. The first moment of a piano note is rich with transient noise — hammer impact, string harmonics activating. Wait half a second. Now listen to the sustained tone.
  4. Ask yourself: Is the combined sound perfectly still — like a locked, fused chord? Or is there a very slow wavering in it — a single “bloom” or pulse in the tone?
  5. If you hear a slow pulse — approximately once per second — you are hearing the fifth beat. This is correct equal temperament. The interval is right.
  6. If you hear nothing at all, stay with it. Don’t move on after five seconds. Give it fifteen to twenty seconds of uninterrupted listening. The beat is there; you are developing the sensitivity to catch it.
  7. Compare to the major third. After listening to C4–G4 for twenty seconds, play C4–E4. Notice how immediately and obviously the major third beats — rapid, clear wavering. Now return to C4–G4. The contrast is extreme: one interval beats fast and obviously; the other is slow and subtle.
  8. Repeat this contrast — major third, then fifth, then major third, then fifth — five times, spending twenty seconds on each interval.

Why this works: You are building a two-point beat rate map: fast (major third) and slow (perfect fifth). Between these two reference points, your ear is beginning to develop a sense of scale — an intuition for relative beat rates that will eventually allow you to identify any interval by how fast it beats. Right now, the goal is simply to hear the fifth beat clearly, consistently, and without doubt.

Daily practice: Ten minutes, once per day. Work in the quietest part of your day. As the week progresses, try the same exercise one octave higher: C5 and G5. You will find that the beat is noticeably faster — closer to 1.5–2 beats per second. Notice the increase and file it in your auditory memory. This octave-to-octave progression is fundamental to temperament work.

An important note on patience: Most students need three to five days of this exercise before the fifth beat becomes reliably audible. This is not unusual — it is exactly what the neuroscience of perceptual learning predicts. The category “slow-beating interval” is being built in your auditory cortex. Once it is built, you will hear it instantly and forever. Trust the process and show up daily.
