Aural piano tuning is the practice of tuning a piano entirely by ear — without the assistance of an electronic tuning device (ETD), an app, or any visual feedback. You use only a tuning lever, a reference pitch, and your trained hearing. For most of the history of piano music, this was simply how pianos were tuned. It was the only method.
Today, electronic aids are widely available, and many technicians rely on them heavily. But aural tuning remains the mark of complete mastery — the skill that separates a technician who can set pitches from one who can make a piano sing.
What makes aural tuning learnable — and what makes it genuinely teachable in a structured, progressive format — is that it depends not on mystical talent, but on a specific physical phenomenon that anyone with normal hearing can be trained to perceive.
The Sound That Makes Tuning Possible: Beats
When two strings on a piano are slightly out of tune with each other, their sound waves interact in a predictable, audible way. They produce a pulsing, wavering effect — a rhythmic “wah-wah-wah” — that the ear can hear clearly once it knows what to listen for. In acoustic physics, this is called beating, and the rate of that pulse — measured in beats per second — is directly related to how far apart the two pitches are.
This is the core perceptual building block of aural tuning. A skilled aural tuner doesn’t guess at pitch. They listen to the speed of beats and use that information to control the position of each string with extraordinary precision.
Here’s the remarkable thing: in the system of equal temperament (the 12-note tuning system used on virtually all modern pianos), specific musical intervals are supposed to beat at specific, predictable rates. A major third in the middle of the keyboard should beat roughly 7 to 9 times per second. A perfect fifth should beat just slightly — about 1 beat per second. A unison, two strings tuned to the same pitch, should not beat at all.

What you’re training: The ability to notice contrast — specifically, the difference between sound that is “wavering” or “beating” and sound that is “still” or “locked.”
How to do it:

Find a quiet room. Sit comfortably. Take a breath and let external distractions settle.

Hum a single note — any comfortable pitch. Hold it as steadily as you can for 5 seconds.

Now consciously waver your voice slightly — as if you were singing a slow, wide vibrato. Notice the difference. Your voice is now moving in pitch, cycling through fast and slow variations.

Stop the waver. Return to the steady note. Notice the quality of “stillness” — the sense that the sound has settled into a single, clear point.

Alternate between wavering and still for 2 minutes, focusing entirely on the perceptual contrast. Not on pitch accuracy. Not on tone quality. Only on: moving vs. still.
Why this works: The beats in aural piano tuning are exactly this — a wavering between two sounds that “wants” to stop. A unison is tuned correctly when the beating disappears and the two strings merge into a single, still sound. Training your ear to notice stillness is the first step to being able to create it.
