In Episodes 1 through 3, you built your first real ear training skills: understanding what aural tuning is, locking onto an external reference pitch with a tuning fork, and hearing unison beats dissolve into stillness. Now it’s time to zoom out and understand the system your ear is being trained to build. That system has a name: equal temperament. In Episode 4, Eathan Janney explains what equal temperament is, why it matters for every single note on the piano, and — crucially — what it sounds like when you begin to hear it as a tuner rather than a listener. This is the conceptual map that gives everything in the remaining 84 lessons a place to live.

The Problem Every Piano Tuning System Has to Solve

Before equal temperament, keyboard instruments faced a mathematical problem with no perfect solution. The physics of musical intervals — octaves, fifths, thirds — are rooted in simple whole-number ratios. A pure octave doubles the frequency. A pure perfect fifth multiplies it by 3/2. A pure major third multiplies it by 5/4. These ratios sound beautiful in isolation.

The problem is that these “pure” ratios don’t stack neatly into a closed 12-note scale. If you try to build all twelve notes of the chromatic scale using pure perfect fifths, you end up slightly sharp of where you started — a discrepancy called the Pythagorean comma, about 23.5 cents of pitch deviation that has no clean mathematical resolution.

For centuries, keyboard instrument builders and theorists tried different workarounds — historical tuning systems collectively called “temperaments” — that distributed this unavoidable discrepancy in different ways. Some keys sounded beautiful and resonant; others sounded harsh and out of tune. The choice of temperament constrained the music that could be written and played.

Equal temperament, which came into widespread use on pianos in the 19th century, solved the problem by distributing the discrepancy perfectly evenly across all twelve semitones. Every half step is exactly the same size. Every key is equally in tune (or equally slightly out of tune, depending on how you think about it). A pianist can modulate freely to any key without encountering the “wolf intervals” of earlier systems.

This decision — to spread the imperfection evenly — is the foundation that every modern piano tuning is built on.

What Equal Temperament Actually Means for Your Ear

Understanding equal temperament intellectually is one thing. Understanding it perceptually — the way an aural tuner must — is something different and more demanding.

Here is the key insight: in equal temperament, almost no interval is perfectly pure. The unison is pure (two strings at exactly the same pitch). The octave is pure (or very close — more on octave stretching in a later lesson). But every other interval — the major thirds, the perfect fifths, the minor sixths — beats. They are deliberately, precisely, controlled imperfections.

A major third in equal temperament beats approximately 7 to 14 times per second, depending on where it sits in the piano’s register. A perfect fifth beats very slowly — roughly once per second in the mid-range. A major second beats faster. These beat rates are not random. They are mathematically derived consequences of equal temperament, and an expert aural tuner uses them as a precision measurement system.

This is what Eathan means when he says your ear is “building a map.” The map is equal temperament. The landmarks are beat rates. Your job, over the next 84 episodes, is to learn every landmark — to hear them, recognize them, and use them to navigate every note on a piano with your ear as the only instrument.

Why the Major Third Is Your First Interval Landmark

After the unison, the first interval Eathan introduces in the series is the major third — and this choice is deliberate. The major third has a distinctive, audible beat rate that is easy to hear once you know what you’re listening for. It beats fast enough to count, slow enough to track, and its characteristic sound changes measurably as you move up the keyboard.

In Episode 4, Eathan has you play a major third (for example, C and E in the middle register) and simply listen — not to whether it sounds “good” or “bad,” but to whether it’s beating, and approximately how fast. A correctly tuned major third in the middle of the piano should beat between 8 and 10 times per second. If it’s beating much slower, the third is too narrow — the notes are too close together. If it’s beating much faster, the third is too wide.

You are not yet being asked to adjust anything. You are being asked to hear the beating as a rate, to notice that it has a speed, and to begin developing the ability to compare one rate to another. This is the same perceptual skill you’ve been building since Episode 1’s stillness drill — but now applied to a beating interval rather than a beating unison.

The Difference Between Listening as a Player and Listening as a Tuner

One of the most important conceptual shifts in Episode 4 is Eathan’s discussion of the difference between hearing a piano as a player or listener and hearing it as a tuner.

A musician listening to a piano hears chords, melodies, dynamics, timbre, expression. The music is in the foreground; the physics are invisible.

A tuner hearing the same piano hears something different: a landscape of beat rates, some faster, some slower, all carrying information. The music, in a sense, steps aside. What remains is the acoustic structure of the instrument — a structure that can be measured, evaluated, and shaped purely through listening.

This shift doesn’t happen all at once. Most students report that somewhere around Lesson 10 to 15, a piano they were previously “listening to” begins to become a piano they are “reading.” The intervals start to have meaning beyond their emotional content. The beats become data, not noise.

Episode 4 is where you’re first introduced to this transformation — not as something you’ve already experienced, but as something you’re headed toward. Eathan explains the neurological basis for it: your auditory cortex is literally building new categorical filters, rewiring to treat beat rates as salient information rather than background texture. It is happening whether you’re aware of it or not. Showing up for the daily exercises is what accelerates it.

Why This System Is Elegant, Not Arbitrary

One thing many students initially resist about equal temperament is the idea that the “correct” tuning involves intervals that aren’t pure. They’ve heard pure major thirds in Barbershop harmony or in early music recordings, and those intervals sound hauntingly beautiful — resonant, still, almost luminous. How can a beating major third be “right”?

Eathan addresses this directly in Episode 4. Equal temperament is not a failure to achieve pure intervals. It is a deliberate choice of a different kind of beauty — the beauty of a system that works everywhere, for every key, in every musical context, on a single instrument. The beating of a major third is not a flaw to be apologized for. It is the sound of a piano doing something no pure-interval instrument can do: playing in all twelve keys without retuning.

Once you hear it this way, the beating major third becomes something to celebrate, not mourn. It’s the acoustic signature of a beautifully practical musical system — and learning to place each beat rate precisely is one of the highest-level skills in all of instrument maintenance.

Episode 4 Ear Training Exercise: The Major Third Beat Awareness Drill

This exercise begins your work with intervals — moving beyond the unison you mastered in Episode 3. You are not yet adjusting any pitches. You are learning to hear a beating interval and register its rate.

What you’re training: The ability to perceive the speed of beating in a musical interval, and to distinguish “fast beats” from “slow beats” before you can count them.

What you need: Any acoustic piano that is reasonably in tune (even a slightly out-of-tune instrument is fine — you’re just training your ear to notice beating, not to evaluate quality). If you don’t have access to a piano, a free piano app or DAW with a virtual piano will work for this exercise.

How to do it:

  1. Sit at the piano and play middle C and the E above it (C4 and E4) simultaneously and let the notes ring.
  2. Listen past the initial attack. The first moment of a piano note is percussive. What you’re listening for is the sustained tone — the held sound after the initial thud of the hammer.
  3. Ask yourself: Is the sound beating? (It should be — this is a correctly tuned equal-tempered major third.) Notice the wavering quality in the sustained tone.
  4. Now try to track the beats. Don’t count yet — just notice: is the beating fast (several wavers per second) or slow (one waver per second or less)?
  5. Compare: Play the same C4 and E4 again, but this time notice how the beat rate feels compared to the unison beats you’ve been working with since Episode 3. Unison beats are slow or absent. Major third beats are fast. Begin building this contrast into your auditory memory.
  6. Move up the keyboard. Play the same interval one octave higher: C5 and E5. Notice that the beats are faster. This is one of the foundational patterns of equal temperament: as you move up in register, intervals beat progressively faster.
  7. Repeat this four-step process (C4/E4, then C5/E5) five times per session.

Why this works: You are beginning to build a beat rate map — the internal library of expected rates for each interval in each register that is the core knowledge base of an expert aural tuner. Right now you’re learning two data points: the major third in the fourth octave and in the fifth octave. Over the next 80+ episodes, you’ll add dozens more until the map is complete.

Daily practice: Two to three minutes each day. As the week progresses, try playing the major third in the third octave as well (C3/E3) and notice that it beats slower than C4/E4. You are developing octave-to-octave beat rate awareness — one of the most important skills in temperament work.
