You understood that these two intervals are acoustical mirror images of each other — a fourth is simply an inverted fifth within the octave. The fourth-fifth cross-check is one of the oldest and most reliable tools in professional aural tuning — a way of confirming that your intervals are correct not just individually, but in relationship to each other. Why You Need More Than One Interval

By the end of Episode 7, you had done something genuinely difficult: you had trained your ear to hear a perfect fifth beating at approximately 1 beat per second, and a perfect fourth beating at approximately 1.5 beats per second. For most students, this represents several days of careful practice and a real threshold of perceptual development.

But here is a problem you may not have noticed yet: how do you know your fifth is actually correct? You heard a beat. You counted it — approximately one per second. You concluded the interval was properly tempered. But what if your piano’s A was slightly off from A440? What if the string moved slightly after you played the chord, and your beat-counting was off by half a beat per second? What if what you heard as “1 beat per second” was actually 0.7, or 1.3?

A single interval, measured in isolation, cannot verify itself. There is no internal check. You hear a beat, you estimate its rate, and you trust your estimation. In the early stages of ear training, that trust is fragile — because your beat-rate sense is still calibrating, and individual estimates carry significant error margins.

This is exactly the problem that the fourth-fifth cross-check solves. Instead of trusting a single interval in isolation, you verify two intervals simultaneously — intervals that are acoustically and mathematically linked — and confirm that their beat rates stand in the correct relationship to each other. If they do, both are correct. If they don’t, one or both is wrong, and the discrepancy tells you which direction the error lies.

The Mathematics of the Cross-Check

The perfect fourth and perfect fifth are not independent intervals. They are two complementary pieces of the same octave.

Play C4 and G4: you have a perfect fifth spanning seven semitones. Play G4 and C5: you have a perfect fourth spanning five semitones. The fifth and the fourth together span exactly twelve semitones — one complete octave. This isn’t a coincidence. It’s the mathematical constraint that connects the two intervals in equal temperament.

In equal temperament, the fifth is narrowed from its pure 3:2 ratio by about 2 cents. The fourth, which is the inversion of the fifth within the octave, is widened from its pure 4:3 ratio by the same amount. Narrowing the fifth and widening the fourth are, in this context, the same act — they are two descriptions of the same acoustic event. This means their beat rates are not independent. They are mathematically coupled through the octave.

In the middle register, the equal-tempered fifth beats at approximately 1 beat per second and the fourth beats at approximately 1.5 beats per second. The ratio of these two rates — 1.5 to 1 — is not arbitrary. It follows predictably from the acoustic physics of equal temperament in that register. And it persists as a proportional relationship as you move up and down the keyboard: higher in register, both intervals beat faster, but their ratio remains consistent.

This is the core of the cross-check: if your fifth beats at 1 per second and your fourth beats at 1.5 per second, and those two intervals share the same middle note (G4), the cross-check passes — both intervals are correct. If your fifth beats at 1 per second but your fourth beats at 2 per second, something is wrong. The notes are internally inconsistent, and the error needs to be found and corrected.

Running the Cross-Check: C4–G4–C5

Here is what the cross-check looks like in practice — the specific exercise Eathan walks through in Episode 8.

Step one: Play C4 and G4. Listen to the fifth. Count its beat rate. You are looking for approximately 1 beat per second. Hold that rate in your ear.

Step two: Without moving your left hand from C4, add C5 to the chord (or simply move to G4–C5 while keeping C4 in memory). Listen to the fourth. Count its beat rate. You are looking for approximately 1.5 beats per second — noticeably faster than the fifth, but not twice as fast.

Step three: Compare the two rates. The fourth should beat faster than the fifth — measurably, audibly faster. If the two intervals sound like they’re beating at nearly the same speed, something is off. If the fourth sounds significantly faster than 1.5 times the fifth, something is off. If the relationship feels right — the fourth clearly faster, but in proportion — the cross-check passes.

Step four: Move the check one step through the circle of fifths. Play G4–D5 (a fifth) and D5–G5 (a fourth). Apply the same logic. The fifth should beat at approximately 1.5 beats per second at this register (slightly faster than the mid-register fifth), and the fourth at approximately 2 beats per second. The proportional relationship should hold.

This process — checking fifths against fourths as you move through the circle — is one of the standard tools of professional aural tuners worldwide. You are performing a form of interval triangulation, using two different angle measurements to confirm a single location.

What the Cross-Check Reveals About Errors

One of the most useful aspects of the fourth-fifth cross-check is that it doesn’t just tell you whether an error exists — it gives you directional information about where the error is.

Consider three possible failure modes:

Failure one: Both intervals beat too fast. If your fifth beats at 1.8 per second and your fourth at 2.7 per second, the ratio between them is still roughly 1.5 to 1 — but both are fast. This tells you the middle note (G4, in our example) is probably too high. The interval relationships are internally consistent, but the pitch level is sharp.

Failure two: The ratio is wrong — fourth too fast relative to the fifth. If your fifth beats at 1 per second and your fourth at 2.5 per second, the ratio is 2.5 to 1 instead of 1.5 to 1. This is inconsistent. The upper note (C5) is almost certainly too high — it’s making the fourth wide (fast) without affecting the fifth.

Failure three: The ratio is wrong — fourth too slow relative to the fifth. If your fifth beats at 1 per second and your fourth at 0.8 per second, the fourth is beating slower than the fifth. This should not happen in equal temperament. The upper note is too low — the fourth is too narrow (close to pure), while the fifth is approximately correct.

Reading these failure modes gives you a diagnostic tool. You’re not just listening to intervals — you’re reading a system. In Episode 8, Eathan introduces the vocabulary for describing these diagnostic states, which will be used throughout the rest of the series.

The Cross-Check as a Perceptual Skill

It’s worth pausing to appreciate what this exercise is actually training. You are now holding two beat rates in working memory simultaneously — the fifth you just heard and the fourth you’re currently hearing — and comparing them. This is a meaningfully more complex task than hearing a single interval in isolation.

The neuroscience here is interesting, and consistent with Eathan’s background as a researcher. Your auditory working memory — the part of your brain that briefly holds recent sounds for comparison — is being trained to operate with temporal precision. Not just “did I hear a beat?” but “how does this current rate compare to the rate I just heard five seconds ago?” This kind of comparative temporal tracking is a higher-order auditory skill, and it develops with exactly the kind of structured, daily practice that the 88 Lessons series provides.

Most students find the cross-check more demanding than individual interval work, but also more satisfying. There is something genuinely convincing about a check that passes — two independent measurements agreeing on the same answer. It is the first moment in the series where your ear has confirmed something to itself, rather than simply accepting an instruction.

An Ancient Tool in a Modern Context

The fourth-fifth cross-check is not a recent invention. Versions of this verification technique appear in tuning treatises going back centuries — in the work of theorists who were figuring out how to tune keyboard instruments long before electronic measurement existed. The specific beat rates differ depending on the temperament being set (equal temperament is a relatively recent dominant standard), but the logic — using paired intervals that share a note as a mutual cross-reference — is as old as systematic keyboard tuning itself.

When you run this cross-check, you are participating in an unbroken line of practical musical craft that spans more than four hundred years. The tools are acoustic. The method is perceptual. The result, when it works, is a kind of certainty that no app or device can improve on: two intervals, measured by one trained human ear, agreeing with each other and with the physics of sound. That is professional aural tuning.

Episode 8 Ear Training Exercise: The Paired Interval Comparison Drill

This exercise builds directly on the individual interval work from Episodes 6 and 7. You are combining two beat-rate observations into a single comparative check — the foundational skill of temperament verification.

What you’re training: The ability to compare beat rates across two successive intervals, holding the rate of the first in auditory memory while listening to the rate of the second.

What you need: Any acoustic piano that is approximately in tune. A quiet room remains important — this exercise requires focused attention to relatively subtle beat rates.

How to do it:

  1. Sit at the piano and settle into a quiet, attentive posture. Take a few slow breaths. You will need auditory working memory to be clear — do not attempt this exercise when you’re fatigued or distracted.

  2. Play C4 and G4 simultaneously. Let the fifth ring for a full ten seconds. Count the beats. You are looking for approximately 1 beat per second.

  3. While still counting the fifth’s beat rate, gently release C4 and play C5 instead, keeping G4 held. (If this is difficult on your piano’s key weight, simply move immediately from the fifth to the fourth after your ten seconds of fifth observation.) Now you are playing G4 and C5 — a perfect fourth.

  4. Compare: Is the fourth beating faster than the fifth you just heard? Approximately 1.5 times faster? If yes — the cross-check passes. If the rates feel identical, or if the fourth is beating dramatically faster, note this observation without judgment. You are gathering data.

  5. Repeat three times at the same location (C4–G4–C5) before moving on. Your goal is consistency: can you reliably hear the fourth as faster than the fifth on this pair of intervals?

  6. Move up one step: Play G4–D5 (a fifth), then D5–G5 (a fourth). Apply the same comparison. Both intervals should beat noticeably faster than their counterparts one octave lower — and the fourth should again be approximately 1.5 times faster than the fifth.

  7. Compare registers: Go back to C4–G4 (slow fifth), then play G4–D5 (faster fifth). Notice the octave-related speed increase. Now go back to the C4–G4–C5 cross-check. You are building a three-dimensional map: beat rates vary by interval type, by register, and by their inter-relationship.

Daily practice: Ten to fifteen minutes per session. Begin each session with two minutes of individual interval review (fifth alone, then fourth alone) before moving into the comparative drill — this primes your auditory working memory with the reference rates before you ask it to compare them.

A note on precision: At this stage, your beat-rate counting will still carry some imprecision. That is fine and expected. The goal of the paired interval drill is not to count to three decimal places — it is to develop a qualitative sense of the relationship between adjacent intervals. “The fourth is clearly faster than the fifth” is the most important observation, and you can make it reliably before you can count beat rates to professional accuracy. Build the qualitative sense first; precision follows.

If the cross-check seems to fail on your piano: This may mean your piano is genuinely not in tune in that register — rather than a perceptual error on your part. Make note of which pairs seem inconsistent, and in which direction. You are beginning to gather real tuning data about your instrument. This information is useful in the premium track exercises.
