Full Episode Summary
What “Laying the Bearings” Means
The phrase “laying the bearings” has been used in piano tuning pedagogy for at least two centuries. Its meaning is straightforward but its implications are deep: before you can tune the rest of a piano — all 88 keys, all 230+ strings — you must first establish a reference octave of twelve notes whose relationships are precisely calibrated to equal temperament. Every other note on the instrument is then tuned by octave from this reference. The reference octave is the bearing, in the navigational sense of the word: a fixed orientation from which all subsequent directions are taken.
In practice, the bearing octave is usually set in the range of A3 to A4 (or sometimes F3 to F4, depending on the tuner’s preferred sequence). These are the notes at the center of the piano’s range where the strings behave most predictably — long enough to have good sustain, short enough to be easily worked with the tuning hammer, in a register where the beat rates used for verification fall in an easily countable range.
Setting these twelve notes correctly, in the right order, with verification at each step — that is what Episode 10 teaches. It is the most important single skill in the entire 88-episode series.
The Starting Point: A440 and the Anchor Octave
Every bearing sequence begins at the same place: A440. In Episode 2, you learned to match A4 to the tuning fork — to bring the string to exactly 440 Hz by eliminating the beats between string and fork. A4 is your bedrock. Everything else is derived from it.
The first move in laying the bearings is to set the octave below: A3. An octave is the simplest possible interval after the unison — pure, without intentional beating, locked by the 2:1 frequency ratio of the first harmonic. You tune A3 by matching it to A4 until there is no beating between them at all. This is the octave check from Episode 5. With A3 correctly set, you have two anchor points — the bottom and top of the temperament range — and the sequence proceeds from A3 upward through the circle of fifths.
Eathan is precise about why you move upward from A3 rather than downward. String tension, inharmonicity, and the mechanical properties of the piano are all more predictable in the ascending direction from this anchor. Practical tuning tradition, accumulated over generations of working tuners, confirms this sequence. You start with A3 and move up.
The Twelve Steps of the Bearing Sequence
The bearing sequence moves through the circle of fifths, setting each new note against a note you’ve already established, verifying each interval before proceeding. Here is the full sequence Eathan introduces in Episode 10:
Step 1: A3 from A4 — Pure octave, no beating. This is your anchor interval.
Step 2: E4 from A3 — A perfect fifth up from A3. Set E4 until the A3–E4 fifth beats approximately 1 beat per second. Verify: does E4 make a reasonable fourth against A4? (E4–A4 should beat approximately 1.5 beats per second.)
Step 3: B3 from E4 — A perfect fourth down from E4 (or equivalently, a fifth from B3 to E4). Set B3 until the B3–E4 fourth beats approximately 1.5 beats per second. Verify with the cross-check: B3–F#4… wait. F#4 hasn’t been set yet. So instead, check B3 against A3: B3–A3 is a major second — a useful consistency check even if it isn’t a primary verification interval.
Step 4: F#4 from B3 — A perfect fifth up from B3. Set F#4 until the B3–F#4 fifth beats approximately 1.3–1.4 beats per second (slightly faster than the A3–E4 fifth, due to the higher register). Verify the fourth: F#4–B4… B4 hasn’t been set yet. Check instead with the major third: D4–F#4. D4 will be set in step 7, but you can anticipate its approximate pitch. (In the premium track, Eathan covers how to use a tentative D4 here as a spot-check before formally setting it.)
Step 5: C#4 from F#4 — A perfect fourth down from F#4. Set C#4 until the C#4–F#4 fourth beats approximately 1.3 beats per second. Cross-check: C#4 against A3 (a third — approximately 10 beats per second at this register).
Step 6: G#3/Ab4 from C#4 — A perfect fifth up from C#4. This step moves through the enharmonic pivot (G# = Ab) and requires careful attention to register. Eathan explains how to set Ab4 from C#4 using the fifth, then verify with the major third Ab4–C5… C5 will be set by octave later. For now, check Ab4 against E4: E4–Ab4 is a major third, which at this register should beat approximately 10–11 beats per second.
Step 7: D4 from G#3/A3 — Returning to a central note. Set D4 using the fifth A3–D4 (or equivalently the fourth D4–A4, since A4 is already set). D4 should make the A3–D4 fourth beat approximately 1.5 beats per second. Verify: D4–F#4 (major third, approximately 10 beats per second at this register).
Step 8: G3 from D4 — A perfect fifth down from D4 (equivalently, G3–D4 is a fifth). Set G3 until the G3–D4 fifth beats approximately 1 beat per second (lower register, so slightly slower than mid-range). Verify: G3–C4 fourth. (C4 will be set in step 9.)
Step 9: C4 from G3 — Setting middle C. C4 to G3 is a fourth (or G3 to C4 is a fourth up). Set C4 until the G3–C4 fourth beats approximately 1.5 beats per second. Immediately run the three-interval verification from Episode 9: C4–E4 (major third), C4–G4 (fifth), G4–C5 (fourth). This is your first full three-interval verification using the complete system.
Step 10: F3 from C4 — A perfect fourth down from C4. Set F3 until the F3–C4 fourth beats approximately 1.3 beats per second (lower register).
Step 11: Bb3 from F3 — A perfect fifth up from F3. Verify Bb3 with the cross-check against F3 and Eb4 (Eb4 being the final step).
Step 12: Eb4/D#4 from Bb3 — The final note of the bearing sequence. Set Eb4 using the Bb3–Eb4 fourth (approximately 1.4 beats per second). Then run the closing check: Eb4–G4 should be a major third beating approximately 11 beats per second. If it does, your temperament is closed. If it doesn’t, the sequence contains an error somewhere.
Verifying as You Go
One of the most important disciplines Eathan teaches in Episode 10 is the habit of continuous verification — checking each new note before proceeding to the next one. This is the difference between a tuning sequence and a guessing sequence.
After every new note, you run the available checks: the primary interval you just set, the cross-check interval (fourth or fifth from a previously set note), and, where possible, a major third spot-check. Each check either passes (confirming the new note) or fails (flagging an error to investigate before it propagates into subsequent notes).
This verification discipline is what separates a well-laid temperament from a flawed one that only reveals its errors at the closing check. Errors caught early are easy to correct. Errors that propagate through six subsequent notes create a cascade that can require starting the sequence over.
Eathan frames this as a professional mindset: “A working tuner does not guess and check at the end. They verify at every step and never proceed past a failed check. The time you spend verifying is not overhead — it is the work.”
The Closing Check: When the Circle Closes
The closing check is the dramatic moment of the bearing sequence: you have set all twelve notes, and you play the final interval — Eb4–G4, a major third — to see whether the circle has closed correctly. If the major third beats at approximately 11 beats per second, the twelve fifths were correctly narrowed and the sequence is complete. If it beats significantly faster or slower, one or more intervals in the chain contain an error.
A perfectly passed closing check is a genuinely satisfying experience. It means that twelve successive intervals, each set with finite precision, have accumulated their small errors in ways that cancel rather than compound — that your ear is calibrated well enough to hold the target beat rates consistently across a full twelve-step sequence. The first time a student achieves a passing closing check is a significant milestone in their development as a tuner.
A failed closing check is also useful. The pattern of the failure tells you where in the sequence the error is most likely to have entered. A flat Eb4 (closing third too slow) usually means one of the final fifths — Bb3 or F3 — was set too narrow. A sharp Eb4 (closing third too fast) often traces to an early error in the sequence — E4, B3, or C#4 — that accumulated over subsequent intervals.

The Complete Temperament: Testing All Intervals
Once the bearing sequence is laid, the final step is a comprehensive interval test — playing every check interval across the temperament octave and confirming that their beat rates are consistent and appropriate for equal temperament.
The test moves systematically:
- All twelve fifths in the circle (each should beat at register-appropriate rates, increasing with ascending octave)
- All twelve fourths (each approximately 1.5 times the rate of the adjacent fifth)
- The major thirds (C4–E4, G4–B4, D4–F#4, A4–C#5, E4–G#4, B3–D#4) — each should beat at approximately register-appropriate rates, increasing faster with ascending pitch than the fifths
- The major sixths (C4–A4, G4–E5, D4–B4, etc.) — a check interval you haven’t used yet but which will be introduced formally in Episode 11
If all checks pass, the temperament is set. If any single interval fails significantly, that failure points to a specific note as the likely error source, and the correction is local — no need to restart the entire sequence.

Episode 10 Ear Training Exercise: Mapping the Bearing Sequence
This exercise is not about adjusting strings — it is about building a mental model of the bearing sequence before you attempt to set it. You are learning the architecture of the process: which note follows which, which checks are available at each step, and where each verification interval comes from.
What you’re training: The ability to follow the bearing sequence mentally — anticipating which interval to set next, which check to apply, and what target beat rate to expect.
What you need: The bearing sequence overview from this episode, a piano that is approximately in tune, and paper and pencil for the mapping exercise.
How to do it:

Write the sequence. Using the twelve steps described in this episode, write out the complete bearing sequence from A3 to Eb4 on a piece of paper. For each step, write: (a) the note being set, (b) the interval from the previous note, and (c) the primary verification check available. You are building a reference card you can use during practice.

Play each interval without adjusting. Starting from A3 and A4 (your anchor), play each interval in the sequence on your piano as it currently stands. For each one, ask yourself:
- Is there a beat? (There should be, for the fifths and fourths.)
- Is the beat approximately the right rate for the register?
- Does the cross-check pass? You are not tuning — you are reading the existing temperament against your three-interval check system.

Note any failures. If any interval check fails noticeably, make a note of which interval and what the failure looks like (too fast, too slow, ratio wrong). This information is valuable — you are gathering real data about your piano’s current temperament.

Trace the sequence through the circle. With your reference card in hand, trace the path of the bearing sequence from A3 through all twelve notes and back to Eb4. Physically point to each key on the piano as you name it in sequence. This spatial-auditory mapping — connecting the conceptual sequence to the physical keyboard — is an important part of the learning process.

Mental rehearsal. Close the reference card. From memory, recite the sequence out loud: “A3 — E4 (fifth up) — B3 (fourth down) — F#4 (fifth up)…” and so on. Check yourself against the card when you lose the thread. Repeat until you can recite all twelve steps without prompting.
Daily practice: Fifteen minutes of sequence mapping per session, in addition to your ongoing interval practice from Episodes 6–9. The goal for this week is to internalize the sequence so thoroughly that you can recite it in order, backward, and by interval type — without the reference card. This memory work is not rote memorization; it is building the procedural fluency that frees your attention, during actual tuning, to focus on the intervals rather than the sequence.
When will you actually set the sequence? Episode 11 begins the process of setting each step with real tuning hammer work. The listening exercise in Episode 10 is specifically about building the cognitive framework before the physical skill is added. Procedural clarity first, then physical precision — this is the sequence of all skill development.
