How I Learned to Hear Equal Temperament — And Why It Changed Everything

There’s a moment every aural tuner remembers. The moment the theory stops being abstract and becomes something you can actually hear.

For me, it happened in a practice room in graduate school. I was deep in neuroscience research by day, but by night I was doing what I’d always done — sitting at a piano, listening. I had been studying tuning for years at that point. I understood equal temperament intellectually: twelve equal semitones, each a ratio of the twelfth root of two, every fifth slightly narrow, every third wide by a predictable amount.

I could explain it to anyone. But I couldn’t quite hear it yet. Not really.

Then one evening, tuning an old upright in a drafty practice room, something clicked. I was checking a fourth — F to B-flat — and instead of hearing two notes, I heard one beating system. A slow, predictable pulse. And in that pulse I recognized something I had only read about: the temperament itself, encoded in the air between two strings.

I sat there for probably twenty minutes just listening to that interval beat.

That was the moment everything changed.


What Equal Temperament Actually Is

Equal temperament is a compromise. A beautiful, mathematically elegant compromise that makes it possible to play in any key on a single instrument.

Here’s the problem it solves: pure intervals — the ones that sound completely smooth and beatless — don’t stack evenly around the octave. If you tune twelve perfectly pure fifths in a row, you end up slightly sharp of where you started. This discrepancy is called the Pythagorean comma, and it’s been the bane of keyboard instrument makers for centuries.

Equal temperament distributes that comma evenly across all twelve fifths, making each one slightly narrow. The result: every key sounds equally good (or equally impure, depending on your philosophy). No wolf intervals. No keys that sound brilliant and others that sound muddy.

The tradeoff is that almost nothing is perfectly pure. Your thirds beat. Your fifths beat slightly. Your fourths beat slightly. The only interval that’s perfectly pure in equal temperament is the octave.

And all of those beats — their speeds, their relationships to each other — are what an aural tuner learns to hear and control.


The Neuroscience of Hearing Beats

Here’s where my research background gets interesting.

Beats aren’t an acoustic illusion. They’re a real physical phenomenon: when two frequencies are close but not identical, they interfere with each other. The interference creates a third amplitude fluctuation at a rate equal to the difference between the two frequencies.

Two strings vibrating at 440 Hz and 441 Hz produce a beat rate of 1 beat per second. At 440 and 443, you get 3 beats per second. Your auditory system detects this fluctuation as a pulsing in the sound.

What’s remarkable — and what my neuroscience training helped me appreciate — is that your brain is extraordinarily good at this. The human auditory system can detect beat rates down to fractions of a beat per second. With training, you can distinguish between a fifth beating at 0.8 beats per second and one beating at 1.1 beats per second. That’s precision most people don’t realize they’re capable of.

The ear is not a passive receiver. It’s an active pattern-recognition system. And it gets better with practice — dramatically better.


What You’re Actually Learning When You Learn Aural Tuning

When students come to 88 Lessons, they sometimes think they’re learning a technique. A sequence of steps. A procedure.

They’re not wrong — there is a sequence. But the deeper thing they’re learning is a new way of listening.

You’re training your auditory cortex to:

  • Detect beats in intervals that most people hear as single sounds
  • Compare beat rates across intervals — is this fifth beating faster or slower than that one?
  • Build an internal map of what equal temperament sounds like, so deviations feel wrong before you consciously analyze them
  • Hold a reference pitch in working memory while your hands move to the next string

This is genuine skill acquisition. It’s the same kind of learning that happens when a musician develops relative pitch, or when a sommelier learns to identify a grape variety by taste. Your brain is physically changing — building new neural pathways, strengthening existing ones.

And like all genuine skill acquisition, it requires repetition, feedback, and time. There are no shortcuts. But there are better and worse ways to practice.


The Sequence That Actually Works

After years of teaching this — through Piano Technicians Masterclasses, online intensives, and now 88 Lessons — I’ve found that the following sequence works for most learners:

1. Start with octaves. Learn to hear the clean, beatless octave before anything else. This calibrates your ear and gives you a reference point.

2. Move to unisons. Tuning multiple strings on a single note to unison is its own skill. Learn to eliminate beats between strings before worrying about temperament.

3. Introduce fourths and fifths. These are your primary temperament intervals. Learn what they sound like pure (beatless), then learn to narrow the fifth slightly until you hear the correct beat rate.

4. Check with thirds. Major thirds beat fast in equal temperament — faster than most beginners expect. Learning to hear and check thirds gives you a powerful verification tool.

5. Build the temperament octave. Learn to set the twelve notes of a single octave in equal temperament from scratch. This is the core skill everything else rests on.

6. Extend across the full piano. Once the temperament octave is solid, you learn to copy it accurately up and down the keyboard.

That evening in the practice room, something else happened that I didn’t fully understand until years later.
