The debate has been running for decades. Walk into any gathering of piano technicians — a Piano Technicians Guild convention, a tuning forum, a Facebook group at midnight — and you’ll find it simmering somewhere. ETD or ear? Electronic tuning device or aural method? Technology or craft?

People have strong opinions. Some veteran technicians will tell you that ETDs are a crutch — that a real tuner tunes by ear, full stop. On the other side, you’ll find working professionals who use ETDs on every job, produce excellent results, and have the client base to prove it. Neither camp is entirely wrong. But both are arguing about the wrong thing.

The real problem isn’t which tool you use. The real problem is that a growing number of piano technicians are entering the field with no aural foundation at all — and that’s a skills gap the industry hasn’t fully reckoned with yet.


What ETDs Actually Do Well

ETDs are fast. They’re consistent. They reduce fatigue on long tuning sessions. In the hands of a skilled technician, they produce excellent results. They’re particularly valuable in noisy environments, on instruments with unusual inharmonicity profiles, and for technicians who need to work efficiently across a high volume of clients.

No serious person in piano technology should dismiss them. The question has never been whether ETDs have value. Of course they do.

The question is: what happens when a technician’s only skill is operating one?

When you learn to tune by ear, you’re not just learning to hit a target pitch. You’re learning to hear inside the sound — to distinguish the slow, rolling beats of a wide fifth from the faster shimmer of a narrow one, to feel when a unison is locked and when it’s just close. This matters practically. ETDs, for all their sophistication, are working from measurements and algorithms. They can’t hear the room. They can’t respond to the way a particular piano sounds under a particular player’s hands. They can’t catch the subtle instability of a string that looks right on a device but sounds wrong in context. Aural tuning fills those gaps — not as a backup, but as an ongoing diagnostic layer that runs throughout every job.

More importantly: when something goes wrong — a string that won’t settle, a unison that keeps drifting, a section of the piano that sounds off despite correct readings — the technician without aural skills has no internal reference to fall back on. They’re flying blind with a screen that says everything is fine.

The technicians who can do both are the ones who catch what the device misses.


The GPS Problem

GPS is extraordinary technology. It has made navigation faster, more accessible, and more reliable for billions of people. But there’s a well-documented phenomenon among people who rely exclusively on GPS: their spatial reasoning degrades.
